What is a personal flotation device?
A personal flotation device is a piece of equipment which is filled with air or light material (usually foam) and has the sole purpose of keeping the wearer afloat if they fall into water. Most personal flotation devices take the form of a sleeveless jacket but there are slight variations in their design depending on the use and level of protection it was designed for. Lifejackets, buoyancy aids and life vests are all types of personal flotation device (PFD).

Certified for quality and safety
Personal flotation devices should be certified for their quality and safety by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). They should also be CE Approved to indicate the product conforms to EEA health, safety, and environmental protection standards.

Getting the correct personal floatation device
It is important that the correct type of personal flotation device (lifejacket, buoyancy aid, or life vest) and size (50N, 100N, 150N) are used to ensure it protects the wearer in the way it was designed and is certified for.
